Aled Walters

Aled was awarded a scholarship to study law at The University of Wales, Aberystwyth and graduated in 1994 with an LLB (Hons) and went on to complete his Legal Practice Course at the College of Law, Chester.

Aled qualified at Hugh James in 1997. Upon qualification, Aled moved to the S4C legal department where he handled the drafting and negotiation of extremely varied commercial contracts, including programme commissioning agreements, co-production agreements, video, television, actors, musicians, writers, composers, format holders agreements, website design agreements, CD-ROM agreements and software license and distribution agreements. In particular at S4C Aled worked and advised on the television rights agreements between the Welsh Rugby Union and S4C with respect to its broadcasts of Welsh domestic rugby and on an animated co-production with fifteen countries worldwide. At S4C he also had responsibility for the legal work of S4C’s commercial subsidiary S4C International which had a turnover of £15m. He was a member of the Year 2000 Compliance Committee and S4C representative on the board of the National Assembly for Wales Broadcasting Company Limited. He also oversaw the implementation of the Data Protection Act 1998 within S4C.

In 2000 Aled joined the Company and Commercial department of Bevan Ashford and continued as such when MLM was established. He was made a Partner in MLM in May 2005. He continues to practice in the area of media and entertainment law and advises broadcasters, numerous independent television production companies and senior industry executives. Aled also handles various corporate matters including drafting and negotiation of business sale and purchase agreements for small and large companies, shareholders agreements, corporate re-organisations, venture capital financing transactions as well as advising generally on company law and intellectual property rights issues and the drafting of documents required to protect such rights.

Aled is recommended in the two leading guides to the legal profession, "Chambers" and "The Legal 500" as one of the leading individuals in his field in the Unitied Kingdom.

Aled sits on the National Eisteddfod of Wales Resource Committee and the Business Board of Urdd Gobaith Cymru. He is also Honorary Counsel of Urdd Gobaith Cymru, a member of the Court of the National Eisteddfod of Wales and the Royal Television Society. He is a fluent Welsh speaker and semi-professional musician. His other recreational interests include playing and watching rugby, squash and skiing.
